SC issues notices to Nawaz, Maryam after NAB appeals against bail

Islamabad (Staff Report): The Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday issued notices to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam on petitions filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) against suspension of their jail sentence in Avenfield case.

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar heard the petition and issued notices to the former PM Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz.

The court observed that it would not take notice of the appeal against Captain (retd) Safdar's sentence suspension, since his prison term was only one year.

The court adjourned the hearing of the case till November 6.

NAB in its appeals pleaded the apex court that the Islamabad High Court (IHC) did not correctly examine the evidence in the case.

It prayed the bench of the apex court to restore the sentences awarded to the Sharifs and to cancel the bail granted to all the accused in the reference.

Former PM Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam and son-in-law Capt (retd) Safdar were released from jail in September after an IHC bench comprising Justice Athar Minallah and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb suspended their sentences.

On July 6, an accountability court sentenced the trio to 11 years, eight years and one year respectively in prison in the Avenfield properties case.
